One of the most anticipated reports from those of us who follow the fashions is the trend survey undertaken by the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association (NKBA).
It interviews more than 600 professionals from kitchen designers to manufacturers to discover what's hot, and what's not.
As we head into 2026, the report indicates that kitchens and spaces dedicated to cooking are going to be bigger than ever.
Kitchens will take an even more dominant place in building designs for new homes and remodeling, according to the NKBA.

Here are six highlights of the NKBA report:
Transitional design – The blend of traditional and modern aesthetics remains the top choice for the ideal kitchen in 2026. Some 72% of respondents opted for this approach for a modern kitchen. A balanced, timeless style that avoids extremes remains the top style choice.
Go-To material – White oak continues to be the professionals' favorite material for cabinetry. Today's ideal kitchen should have flat, panel slab doors – a distinct European look. You'll find they're super-popular in Ikea designs. Only 28% of respondents liked the idea of darker woods, such as walnut.
Color clash – The survey found two differing points of view on color. Neutrals remain the dominant choice, but an increasing number of professionals said greens and blues would re-emerge next year, especially as backsplashes and accessories.
Be streamlined – There's a strong push toward maximizing storage and minimizing visual clutter to create a clean, high-end feel. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry and panel-ready appliances that match the cabinet faces are trending.
Multi-functional hub – Homeowners are adding dedicated, activity-based zones, such as a coffee station, to their kitchen remodels. The survey found the idea of attached mudrooms and dedicated pet feeding stations next to the kitchen were popular.
Out of favor – Easily identifiable styles, such as farmhouse, cottage and Mediterranean kitchens, are falling out of favor with everyone. This reinforces the popularity of the more adaptable transitional style.
